Did Piccolo Play A Part In Chi-Chi Becoming An Overprotective Mother?

by Kirshorn Butler

There has been a long ongoing opinion among Dragon Ball fans that Chi-Chi ruined Gohan by making him focus solely on studying as opposed to training and that it made him a lot weaker than he should be. An interesting note is that Chi-Chi herself used to be a martial artist. In fact a lot Western fans are unaware that she actually fought in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, because they haven’t watched the original Dragon Ball.

It was here where she not only fought Goku but also married him once the tournament was complete. At the time it was clear she had no issues with fighting, because she herself was a fighter. It was at this tournament however where she witnessed something that most likely affected her view on for the rest of the series.

Chi-Chi had the misfortune to watch her future husband brutalized and nearly killed by Piccolo. Most women would not wish to see such a thing happen to their loved ones. Having witnessed this, she more than likely came to the conclusion that she didn’t want the dangerous lifestyle of a fighter for her children. Many would probably think that it’s dragon ball and death has no consequence, but just because someone can be brought back to life doesn’t mean anyone would want to be in a situation where it needs to be done. This can be especially true in the case of a mother and her children.

Many Dragon Ball fans believe that Piccolo is Gohan’s real father (a joke that is quite old and tired). In truth he may potentially be the reason why the Gohan that so many fans love is not great as he can be. Had she not witnessed the fight between Goku and Piccolo, Chi-Chi would more than likely still prefer Gohan to be a scholar, but raised similarly to his brother Goten. Chi-chi would still have him study, but she would have probably not try so hard to keep him away from fighting altogether. She would probably let Goku train him a bit, which would have been good for the both of them. Piccolo is still good a mentor and friend even, though his past actions may have indirectly hindered Gohan’s growth. In real life situations there can be people with good fathers that have a Piccolo in their lives. Does anyone have their say on this.
