Did Piccolo Play A Part In Chi-Chi Becoming An Overprotective Mother?

by Kirshorn Butler

There has been a long ongoing opinion among Dragon Ball fans that Chi-Chi ruined Gohan by making him focus solely on studying as opposed to training and that it made him a lot weaker than he should be. An interesting note is that Chi-Chi herself used to be a martial artist. In fact a lot Western fans are unaware that she actually fought in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai, because they haven’t watched the original Dragon Ball.

It was here where she not only fought Goku but also married him once the tournament was complete. At the time it was clear she had no issues with fighting, because she herself was a fighter. It was at this tournament however where she witnessed something that most likely affected her view on for the rest of the series.

Chi-Chi had the misfortune to watch her future husband brutalized and nearly killed by Piccolo. Most women would not wish to see such a thing happen to their loved ones. Having witnessed this, she more than likely came to the conclusion that she didn’t want the dangerous lifestyle of a fighter for her children. Many would probably think that it’s dragon ball and death has no consequence, but just because someone can be brought back to life doesn’t mean anyone would want to be in a situation where it needs to be done. This can be especially true in the case of a mother and her children.

Many Dragon Ball fans believe that Piccolo is Gohan’s real father (a joke that is quite old and tired). In truth he may potentially be the reason why the Gohan that so many fans love is not great as he can be. Had she not witnessed the fight between Goku and Piccolo, Chi-Chi would more than likely still prefer Gohan to be a scholar, but raised similarly to his brother Goten. Chi-chi would still have him study, but she would have probably not try so hard to keep him away from fighting altogether. She would probably let Goku train him a bit, which would have been good for the both of them. Piccolo is still good a mentor and friend even, though his past actions may have indirectly hindered Gohan’s growth. In real life situations there can be people with good fathers that have a Piccolo in their lives. Does anyone have their say on this.

Character Spotlight: “Yu Yu Hakusho’s” Kurama

A glimpse of all you ever needed to know about “Yu Yu Hakusho’s” Kurama

by Shernee Symonette

Kurama in the manga of YuYu Hakusho was actually said to be wearing a blue uniform with black hair instead of  his infamous red hair and pink outfit. For the adaption of the anime the color scheme was turned to red hair with a pink uniform.

Kurama’s new color scheme was meant to showcase his inner fox demon. It also is complementary towards his demon abilities of plant manipulation, which he seems to favor the red rose.

Most of Kurama’s attacks are rose-centric, a few are:
The infamous rose whip, rose whiplash, rose whip thorn wheel, petals and thorns and bloodsucking plant.

Viewers have been introduced to three types of Kurama

Demon Fox version:

Yoko Kurama/Kitsune Form

Shuichi Minamino/Human Form
In the Filipino dub version Kurama’s name was changed to Denise as he was mistaken as a female, it was later changed to Dennis.

Creator Yoshihiro Toshiro had planned for Kurama and Hiei to be lovers in his first drafts. Kurama was actually supposed to be a girl which can be accounted by Kurama’s effeminate features. However he decided on the pair being just close friends instead. (this has not stopped several fans from shipping the two romantically) There is also a two shot extra which outlines the meeting between the two.

Kurama is speculated to be named after Kurama Mountain while Hiei is named after Mount Hiei. The two mountains are adjacent to each other.

Kurama makes an appearance in Toshiro’s Hunter x Hunter as an action figure.

Kurapika is based off of Kurama. Notable similarities are both being misidentified as female, ‘Kura” at the beginning of their names and Kurapika’s chain attack being similar to Kurama’s rose vine, accessory weaponry.

Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of Naruto was inspired by Kurama, hence naming the nine tailed fox, Kurama.

Nobuhiro Watsuki, the creator of Rurouni Kenshin can also be speculated to take inspiration from Kurama as Kenshin has a few similarities, from mannerisms to appearance.
